Based on watching people play Wii over the weekend. Check it out. It was very funny watching people "virtual" boxing.

A friend borrowed her 80-odd year old grandfather's Wii over Christmas and became so addicted, she's thinking of buying one for herself.

Modern ones. The Wii has the most "social" potential. Though the graphics on the 360 and PS3 are both fantastic. Depends on what sort of games you want and how you intend to use it (ie to kill time on your own or as a party thing).
Old skool, go the Atari!

Obligatory Yahtzee.
I have a 360, and aside from the crippling bugs (which I have yet to experience) it's reasonably solid. The only issue is that there's a lot of studios that seem to be ditching HD-DVD for Blu-Ray, and Microsoft are alienating many of their studios.
The Escapist's review is pretty accurate, and considering your house, a Wii is probably the best bet. Then PS3 also has Guitar Hero (naughty Sarah, only giving 1/3rd of the story!) and also has the Sing Star series (I think that's what it's called.. I've never really cared about PS3 enough to check out the games.)
Basically, PS3 has great hardware, and good party games.
Wii is great if you're not an experienced gamer (the point about moving with the joystick/not being able to move with the motion sensor applies) and want to mooch in on Nintendo's extensive Mario contracts.
The 360 is fine if you have a beard, no girlfriend and want to pass some time and maybe watch one of the few movies released on HD-DVD before it goes the way of the dodo.
I do like the 360 for casual gaming, though, and the reverse compatibility allows for games such as Fable to be played on a new system with the minimum of fuss.
The only real issue with the 360's compatibility is that you have to have a decent broadband connection to make use of it. The other issue is that the 360 requires (REQUIRES) a payment to utilise online PVP.
Not worth it.
Anywhoo, go a PS3. I can't see you utilising a 360 to it's fullest potential, and you're over 5 so a Wii wouldn't cut it.

Exactly...who wants to excercise when you should be vegetating when playing games...
I wouldn't be keen for a wii either.
Haven't played the PS3...so can't compare....
I love games.... I love them a lot.
At the moment, I'm a bit addicted to Facebook's poker.....
