Hullabaloo 2010!! The Perth Lindy Exchange
Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 7:30pm to Monday, April 26, 2010 at 11:55pm
To see more details and RSVP, follow the link below: http://www.facebook.com/n....0a011G7 Perth's biggest annual swing dance event (now in it's 7th year) is on again over the ANZAC weekend in 2010! Set aside the weekend for one of Australia's most loved swing dance camps - and it all happens in your very own city!! We had over 50 people come from all over the country in 2009 to share the Lindy love - so don't miss out in 2010!
Hullabaloo events run over 5 nights in some spectacular venues. Things to look forward to are;
- 8 social events including a formal themed 'Swing Ball' at the beautiful Midland Town Hall and The 'Hullabaloo Hop' at the spectacular Perth Town Hall; - Live music by some of Perth's best swing bands; - 2 days of workshops, 9 hours of classes and 3 learning streams with international, national and local teachers; - plenty of out-of-towners and locals to dance with!! - PLUS all the usual craziness over the ANZAC day long weekend! ____
Hullabaloo 2010 Teachers
Our ever vigilant talent scouts have scoured the planet for the best swing dancing teachers and found them! Our cast comprises overseas, interstateand home grown talent from right here in Perth. Introducing our teachers for Hullabaloo 2010:
Hasse Mattsson and Marie Nahnfeldt Mattsson - Sweden
Hasse and Marie are internationally recognized for there high energy and spirit as Lindy Hop dancers and instructors. Their classes emphasize the use of musicality, technique and partner connection. Energy and focus on fun are constant elements to every class.
They are loved as teachers worldwide and they appear on the instructors line up for many established camps around the globe, including teaching for the last 6 years at Herräng (Sweden), Camp Hollywood (USA), Sinera Swing Festival (Spain), Lindy Shock (Hungary), All Balboa Weekend (USA) and Rock That Swing Festival (Germany) just to mention a few.
They are doing their best to learn more about dancing and to spread their knowledge and passion for Swing dancing to others and are very excited about coming to Hullabaloo and Australia for the first time. http://www.hasseandmarie.com/
Shob Nambiar and Andy Fodor, Melbourne - Australia
Shob and Andy's lindy hop journey together started 5 years ago and brought them more joy than they could have dreamed. They have numerous Australian titles under their belts and are honoured to be part of Melbourne's performance troupe "Echoes of Harlem". Their first love is the joy and creativity of the social dance floor where they are known for their connection and originality. They have danced and taught all over Australia and recently in NZ and currently run one of Melbourne's largest weekly swing dance venues.
Shob and Andy's classes emphasise connected body movement and finding your own unique way to express music. Their warm and approachable personalities has made them one of Melbourne's most popular teaching couples. Shob endeavors to keep discovering new ways to push her dancing and Andy (originally from Canada) loves dancing with everyone from beginners to teachers and tries to leave his partner smiling by the end of it.
Highlights and Titles: AJC Slow Champions 07, 08, 09, AJC Fast Foot 2nd place 06, 07, 08, AJC Jack and Jill Champion 06, 08, 09, Choreography for performance troupes Bratpack, Scatpack and Savoy Stomp. http://mel.swingpatrol.com/profile/100032/andy-fodor.php http://mel.swingpatrol.com/profile/42/shobhana-nambiar.php
Deb and Glenn Moore, Perth - Australia
Deb and Glenn have been teaching Lindy Hop in Perth since 1998 and have a great passion for the swing era, including the music, antiques, fashion and dance. After starting Rock & Roll in 1996, they introduced Lindy Hop to Perth in 1997 and have been swingin' ever since. While they love flashy moves, they work hard on getting the basics as tight as possible - leading and following and the interaction between the couple is what it's about. They are also keenly loved as social dancers wherever they go.
They danced the new millennium in with The Rhythm Hot Shots in Mexico and have attended many international events in Perth, Melbourne, Canberra, Singapore and the biggest of them all - Herrang, Sweden. Deb and Glenn have taught at workshops around Australia including Hullabaloo, MLX and The Jumptown Jam and have performed as original members of Perth's first swing performance team. They were also founding members of the Perth Swing Dance Society. http://www.swingjunction.com/
Roger Schmidlin and Sophie Yesberg, Perth - Australia
Roger Schmidlin began teaching Lindy Hop here in Perth in 1997. Born and raised in Switzerland, Roger's Lindy Hop career started in 1995 with Frankie Manning and the Rhythm Hot Shots in Herräng, Sweden. Roger brings a wealth of experience to Perth, having taught in Switzerland, U.S.A., Australia, recently on a cruise ship in the Caribbean, and having danced in many performance teams all over the world.
Swing Dance was immediately attractive to Sophie, as it has similar concepts, playfulness and creativity to Contact Improvisation, another passion of hers. Sophie also enjoys the spontaneity of Jack and Jill comps and took first place in the 2004 and 2008 Hullabaloo Jack and Jill Lindy Hop Competitions in Perth and first place in the 2007 and 2008 Balboa On The River Jack and Jill Competitions in Brisbane. Sophie has taught at Camp Oz, Bal on the River, Sydney Swing Festival and Bal Rendevous in the USA and is an extremely popular social dancer wherever she travels. http://www.swingzing.com/?page_id=141
Crystle Challinger and Chris 'Spud' McMullan, Perth - Australia
Crystle has been dancing since she was six years old and studied ballet, tap and jazz for over 10 years before being introduced to swing dancing on her 21st birthday. She was immediately mesmerised and 7 years later is still loving every minute of it. A rare talent, Crystle is an accomplished leader AND follower. Her powerful style and flashy moves are eye catching and make her an inspiration to many.
Spud was introduced to Lindy Hop back in 2003. His personal dedication to the dance inspires him to strive for a dynamic partner connection, improvisation and musicality. Spud enjoys the spirit of swing dancing and has won 1st Place in Jack and Jill comps in Australia and Japan. Having taught Lindy Hop in both Australia and overseas, Spud tries to create a relaxed, fun atmosphere in his Swing Academy classes, never forgetting what it is like to learn to dance for the first time. http://www.swingacademy.com.au/

Calling all Swing DJs!
It's now time to put out the call for Hullabaloo 2010 DJs. Music is a very important part of any exchange and as with any other PSDS social event, we do our best to provide the highest standard of DJing to ensure that dancers have the best possible opportunity to enjoy the event. The PSDS now invites all experienced swing DJs (you must have DJd a major swing event) who will be attending Hullabaloo 2010 to submit an email with information on the following:
1. How long you have been DJing. 2. The major events you have DJed. 3. Your aim and goals as a swing DJ. 4. Any specific date/time preferences or limitiations for DJing at Hullabaloo
There are many opportunities for experienced DJs to spin some tunes at Hullabaloo this year, and successful applicants will be paid $20 per hour for their time. You will be DJing at one of the favourite social events on the Australian swing calendar and your profile will be featured along with your photo on the Hullabaloo website. If you are interested please email your details by Friday the 12th of March 2010 to Michelle Turner at secretary@perthswing.com
Volunteers wanted!
To ensure that Hullabaloo runs smoothly we are calling for volunteers to help out during the event. It could mean attending a welcome desk, helping set up, moving things about or cleaning up. The Perth Swing Dance Society will thank you for your assistance with a cash reimbursement. Just indicate when you register if you're keen, and we'll be in touch!
Hosting and being Hosted
Forget five star accommodation, a la carte menu, room service and in-house movies, the place to stay in Perth is with a Perthie!! Exchanges are always more fun when embedded with the locals! If you are heading to Perth from out of town, or are a Perthie with spare room for one (or many!) of our Lindy visitors, simply fill in your details on the registration page online, or send a politely-worded email to our friendly hosting manager at hosting@perthswing.com

Hullabaloo starts this Thursday!!! Only 1 day to go!!
Hullabaloo 2010 is almost here! Already interstate and overseas visitors have started arriving for one of the biggest events on the Australian Swing calendar so please make them feel welcome! It's time to polish those dancing shoes, unload your pets to grandma and get ready to swingout till you drop!!
Online registrations have now closed
We can not accept any more registrations for classes, unfortunately you will not be able to turn up on the weekend and expect to attend classes. If you have any outstanding payments, please make them at one of the social events. We will be accepting cash or cheque only at the registration desk - no more direct deposits or Paypal please.
You can pay at the door for any of the social events (except the Ball which was via registration only and has now closed). For door prices, event info and a map of all the locations go to http://www.perthswing.com/hullabaloo/?page_id=17
The Casablanca Hullabaloo Ball - Formal dress code reminder
A reminder that the Sunday night 'Casbalanca Ball' has a vintage Hollywood theme and is formal dress (30s/40s vintage style, or modern dressy after five wear). The Hullabaloo committee always go to great effort to make the ball a gala event and would really appreciate it if all dancers made an effort to help keep it formal to help create atmosphere on the night. No jeans or casual dancewear allowed.
Shoes - sticky and fast floors
At any swing camp there are usually a lot different venues with all kinds of floors. If you haven't danced at one of the Hullabaloo venues advertised before make sure you bring at least two kinds of shoes in case the floor is sticky or fast. Nothing worse than being stuck on the sidelines because of unsuitable shoes! Please note - no black soled shoes allowed at the Saturday late night venue in the Slow Lindy/Blues room and no leather soles at the Perth Town Hall.
Swing dance etiquette - a heads-up for dancing in Perth
Many of us are well aware of standard dance etiquette, but whenever you travel to new and exotic locations there is always something that is a little different from home, cultural differences let's say.
In previous years a few interstate dancers have made the comment that they never get a second dance, interpreting it as something negative. Unlike some of the east coast scenes the Perth scene doesn't have the "culture" of the lead always asking for a second dance - so don't take it personally!
That being said - it's also not a "rule" either. So this is a call out to the Perthies to have as many dances as possible with our interstate guests to acknowledge that they've made a huge commitment to come over here (one quarter of our registrations are from over east!).
And to our visiting dancers - don't get disheartened, sometimes the Perthies can get a little shy or overwhelmed with all the new faces (we are the world's most isolated capital city!). So please don't take offence if you're not being asked lots or for a second dance.
To everyone - get out there dance with as many different people as possible - with nearly 200 people attending you really won't have to dance with the same person twice on any night!!
__
Monday - ANZAC Day public holiday
Looking for something to do on the public holiday? As in previous years we're organising a BYO picnic in Kings Park overlooking the city (weather permitting of course).
Date: Monday 26th April Time: 1 pm to 5 pm Place: War Memorial, Kings Park (overlooking the city) BYO: Everything! Picnic rug, picnic food, drinks, frisbees, twister, hacky-sacks, bocce sets, chairs, portable music (if you can!)
See you Thursday night!!!
Your Hullabaloo 2010 Committee
